GENERAL & LEGAL
Q: Who can legally purchase night vision and thermal devices from Specter Optics?
A: Only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (green card holders) can purchase and possess our products due to ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) requirements. We cannot sell, transfer, or demonstrate our devices to any foreign national, regardless of location.
Q: Do I need a license to own night vision?
A: No license is required for ownership if you are a U.S. person. However, all customers must sign our ITAR Compliance Agreement prior to purchase and agree not to export, resell, or transfer the product outside of compliance.
Q: Are your devices ITAR regulated?
A: Yes. All of our night vision and thermal imaging devices fall under ITAR control. Unauthorized export, even temporarily, is a federal offense. This includes carrying devices overseas or allowing non-U.S. persons to operate or view through the equipment.
Q: Do I need to sign an ITAR agreement?
A: Yes. We require all customers to read and sign a one-page ITAR Compliance Agreement before purchasing any night vision or thermal system. This ensures understanding of your responsibilities as the end user.
PRODUCT-SPECIFIC
Q: What are autogated tubes, and do your systems include them?
A: Autogated image intensifier tubes regulate voltage in real time, helping prevent damage from sudden bright light exposure. They are especially useful in urban or mixed-light environments. At Specter Optics, every device we sell comes standard with an autogated tube, regardless of tier. We believe every user deserves professional-grade protection and performance.
Q: What is FOM and SNR, and why do they matter?
A: FOM (Figure of Merit) is calculated as Resolution x Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). The higher the FOM, the better the performance in low-light conditions. Our standard systems come with 1400FOM/23SNR, while our elite offerings feature 2000FOM/28.5SNR tubes for maximum clarity and contrast.
Q: Are your optics the same across all models?
A: Yes. All of our systems incorporate Carson-style lenses which offer better edge-to-edge clarity, longer eye relief, and less distortion than traditional PVS-14 optics. We take pride in providing you the best glass we can without the price tag of a brand name.
Q: What monocular night vision options do you offer?
A: We currently offer three performance tiers:
-
Phantom One – Our rugged entry-level monocular. Lightweight, reliable, and built for users who want essential performance on a budget.
-
Specter Scout – A versatile mid-level unit with manual gain control and upgraded lenses. Ideal for those who want field-adjustable brightness control.
-
Nightshade MNV – Our top-tier monocular with autogated 2000FOM/28.5SNR tubes. Built for operators and pros who need maximum visibility in all conditions.
Q: Do your monoculars come ready to use with a helmet?
A: Yes. Every monocular includes a J-arm and aluminum G24-style helmet mount at no extra cost. That means you’re ready for hands-free use out of the box.
Q: What makes the Lunar Edge B2 PVS-31 unique?
A: This is our standard binocular system. It features Carson-style lenses and comes with 1400FOM/23SNR tubes, with an optional upgrade to 2000FOM. It's lightweight, rugged, and IP67-rated. A G24-style helmet mount is also included standard.
Q: What are the benefits of your panoramic quad-tube systems?
A: Our Shadow Vision G2 GP-18 and Blackout G4 Strike Bridge offer 120° field of view, giving you unmatched peripheral awareness. The G4 has a more compact, lighter bridge and supports higher-grade optics and tube upgrades.
Q: Can I integrate your night vision with thermal?
A: Yes. Our systems are compatible with the Heatstrike Clip-On Thermal Imager, which mounts directly in front of the objective lenses for thermal fusion.
Q: What is the difference between your thermal fusion goggles?
A: We offer:
-
Shadow Forge Thermal Fusion – Our base thermal fusion system. Durable, versatile, and helmet-mountable.
-
Obsidian Strike Thermal Fusion – A top-tier fusion goggle with enhanced SNR, resolution, and advanced display overlays. Includes helmet mount standard.
USE AND COMPLIANCE
Q: Can I use your night vision or thermal gear for hunting?
A: That depends on your state. Many states allow NV and thermal for predator control (e.g., hogs, coyotes), while some restrict or ban it. Always consult your state’s Department of Natural Resources or game laws.
Q: Which states restrict night vision or thermal hunting?
A: It is YOUR responsibility to know your state and federal laws.
Q: Can I travel overseas with my NVG or thermal optic?
A: No. ITAR prohibits export. Even flying with your device in checked baggage is illegal. Devices must not leave U.S. soil or be shared with foreign nationals.
Q: Can foreign nationals use my device in the U.S.?
A: No. Allowing a non-U.S. person to view through, use, or handle ITAR-regulated devices—even temporarily—is considered an export violation.
Q: Do you sell to law enforcement or government agencies?
A: Yes. We support law enforcement and military buyers. Contact us for agency verification and volume pricing.
Q: What are the penalties for violating ITAR?
A: Severe. Civil penalties can exceed $500,000 per violation, and criminal penalties can include up to 20 years in prison. We take compliance seriously and expect our customers to do the same.
